Crime Scene Reconstruction

This advanced professional development course is tailored for seasoned investigators and crime scene technicians seeking to master the scientific approaches and methodologies involved in reconstructing crime scenes. Participants will gain comprehensive instruction in evidence analysis, pattern recognition, and logical deduction techniques essential for determining the sequence of events at a crime scene.

Throughout the program, attendees will become familiar with established best practices and step-by-step procedures for reconstructing diverse types of incidents. The curriculum progresses from identifying and analyzing evidence through proper documentation and courtroom-ready presentation of conclusions.

Hands-On Learning Activities

The course incorporates intensive practical exercises to build proficiency in critical skill areas including bloodstain pattern interpretation, pattern evidence examination, and gunshot trajectory analysis. Participants will engage in field-based exercises and conduct live-fire demonstrations at a shooting range to document evidence from actual vehicle shootings. Case-based learning activities require students to analyze real crime scenarios, complete full reconstructions, and present their findings to peers.

Target Audience

This course serves experienced law enforcement professionals including detectives, investigation supervisors, medical examiner investigators, coroner staff, and military investigative personnel. Enrollment is limited to active sworn and non-sworn law enforcement officers and medical examiner staff.

Prerequisites and Preparation

Prior education or practical experience in bloodstain pattern analysis is strongly recommended. Participants should prepare for field-based work by bringing appropriate outdoor attire and clothing suitable for hands-on bloodstain documentation activities. Attendees are encouraged to bring cameras or documentation equipment for field exercises and may benefit from bringing a laptop computer for coursework.

Special Notes

This course has earned IAI Crime Scene Certification approval. Specific days are devoted to bloodstain pattern interpretation work, which may occur at ground level, and hands-on documentation at an outdoor shooting range.
