Digital Photography for Law Enforcement

This comprehensive program prepares law enforcement professionals to master the use of digital camera systems within their agencies. Participants will develop proficiency in photographing various law enforcement scenarios—ranging from injuries to outdoor nighttime crime locations—with particular emphasis on building confidence in adjusting camera settings to accurately capture both scenes and evidentiary materials.

The course addresses the complex lighting challenges encountered during crime, crash, and fire investigations through a combination of practical exercises set in indoor, outdoor, daytime, and nighttime environments. Participants may bring departmentally issued or personal cameras for hands-on training. Instructors will guide attendees through industry best practices, enabling them to document diverse scenes and evidence with proficiency.

Beyond practical application, the program emphasizes court-accepted documentation methods and proper image archival procedures consistent with standards established by the Scientific Working Group on Imaging Technology (SWGIT), the Organization of Scientific Area Committees for Forensic Science (OSAC), and the Scientific Working Group on Digital Evidence (SWGDE).

  • Departmental camera familiarization
  • Scene documentation fundamentals
  • Footwear, tire tread, injury, and macro close-up evidence photography
  • Daytime and nighttime flash photography techniques and light painting
  • Digital image archiving and chain of custody procedures

Program Details

Duration: 24 hours

Intended Audience: Patrol officers, crime scene technicians, detectives (both newly assigned and experienced), investigations supervisors, medical examiner and coroner investigators, military investigative personnel, and prosecuting attorneys

Certification: This program meets requirements for IAI Crime Scene Certification approval.

Important Note: Evening hours are incorporated on the second day of instruction.

  • Digital camera (SLR format preferred)
  • Memory cards and compatible card reader
  • External flash with hot shoe mounting capability
  • Off-camera sync cord
  • Battery charger and spare batteries for camera and flash
  • Tripod
  • Flashlight for evening exercises
  • Bubble level
  • Work clothes suitable for outdoor conditions, including wet weather
  • Laptop for post-exercise photo review

Recommended:

  • Remote shutter release cable or wireless remote
  • Circular polarizing filter compatible with your lens (various sizes available)
  • Macro lens or magnifying filters
