RECRUITING ANNOUNCEMENT – JANUARY 2025
The City of Woonsocket announces an open competitive examination for the position of police officer.
APPLICATION PROCESS
- Step 1 - Applications must be submitted online via policeapp.com by April 1, 2025 to be considered for the August, 2025 RI Municipal Police Academy. There is a $35 administrative fee to apply from policeapp.com.
- Step 2 - Applicants must register for the written and fitness tests. Woonsocket PD uses a third-party testing service for the written test and physical test. Applicants are responsible for the associated costs. Information regarding the upcoming testing dates will be provided in the confirmation email once your application is submitted.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY:
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must be a US citizen
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Minimum of a high school diploma, or equivalent
- Have no felony convictions
SALARY:
- Probationary salary rate: $935.35 weekly
- Salary rate after probation: $1279.22 weekly / Step 2 - $1304.81 weekly

WRITTEN TEST
The written test will be administered online by a third-party testing service (information will be provided upon receiving of application) on the following dates:
- Jan 31, Feb 1, Feb 2
- Feb 28, Mar 1, Mar 2
- Apr 4, 5, 6
Candidates must provide a passing certified Written Exam certificate from one of the test dates listed above or from a written assessment from the third party testing service within two years of October 4, 2024. Failure to pass the Written Exam with a 70 or above shall prevent an applicant from advancing in the selection process.
The fee for taking the test is determined by the third party testing service. They may be contacted if a financial
hardship exists.
FITNESS ASSESSMENT
Applicant must schedule through a third-party testing service (information will be provided upon receiving of application). The Fitness Test will be administered on the following dates:
- Feb 2, 2025 (8:00 am) at the URI Mackal Field House
- Mar 2, 2025 (8:00 am) at the URI Mackal Field House
- April 6, 2025 (8:00 am) Coventry High School
Candidates must provide a passing certified physical assessment certificate from the testing service dated within one year of application.
The fee for taking the test is determined by the testing service. Please contact them if a financial hardship exists.

ORAL BOARD
Applicants who pass the written and fitness assessments will be scheduled for an Oral Board. The oral board will take place at the Woonsocket Police Department, 242 Clinton St., Woonsocket, RI 02895 at a time to be determined.
ELIGIBILITY LIST
Applicants who complete these stages will be placed on an eligibility list.
BACKGROUND CHECK
Applicants on the eligibility list are subject to an extensive background check. The background check consists of an integrity interview and a thorough examination of the candidate’s personal history, including employment, education, family, character references credit, military service, encounters with law enforcement, and any other areas as directed. Candidates may be removed from the eligibility list as a result of the background check.
PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING & MEDICAL SCREENING
Candidates must pass psychological and medical examinations.
ACADEMY ENTRANCE FITNESS ASSESSMENT
Candidates must pass a fitness assessment by the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy on May 19, 2025.
