Now Accepting Applications for Entry Level Police Officers

The City of Garfield Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Entry Level Police Officer, no experience or certification is required. The City of Garfield is a Civil Service jurisdiction; however, NJSA 11A:4-1.3 now allows Civil Service jurisdictions to hire a non-PTC certified candidate directly.

YOU MUST MEET THE BELOW REQUIREMENTS LISTED IN THE HIRING FLYER TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR EMPLOYMENT.  If you are PTC certified (this excludes applicants who only attended a SLEO I or II academy), we cannot accept your application.

The Garfield Police Department is located at 411 Midland Avenue, Garfield, NJ 07026 and currently employees sixty-seven (67) Sworn Officers and three (3) Record Room Clerks. The City of Garfield which is bordered by Elmwood Park, Saddle Book, Lodi, South Hackensack, Wallington, Passaic, and Clifton is a very diverse community which comes with a lot of challenges. Some of the challenges faced are language and cultural differences. In order to accommodate the community, the City of Garfield has hired bilingual Police Officers spread throughout the Patrol Shifts that speak Polish, Spanish, French, Italian, Macedonian, and Croatian.

Within the sixty-seven (67) Officers there are the following: 1 Chief, 1 Deputy Chief, 3 Captains, 7 Lieutenants, 11 Sergeants, 7 Detectives, 3 Traffic Officers, and 34 Police Officers. 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Be a citizen of the United States and the State of New Jersey
  • Be at least 18 but not more than 35 years of age
  • Be of sound in body and of good health sufficient to satisfy the Board of Trustees of the Police and Firemen’s Retirement system of N.J. as to eligibility for membership in the retirement system
  • Be able to read, write, and speak the English language well and intelligently
  • Be of good moral character that has not been convicted of any criminal offense involving moral turpitude
  • Have a minimum of 60 academic college credits or individuals who have served in the military and have not earned 60 academic college credits, but can substitute two years of full-time, active-duty military service, or combination of college credits and full-time active-duty military service to satisfy the education requirements. ALL EDUCATIONAL AND/OR MILITARY REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET AT THE TIME OF HIRE
  • Pass a rigorous selection process, including a physical fitness test, oral interview, psychological evaluation, medical exam, and a full background check
  • Be physically, mentally sound and emotionally stable to possess the ability to understand and obey orders and to perform the duties required by the Garfield Police Department
  • Must possess a Valid New Jersey Driver’s License in good standing
  • Bi-lingual speaking is a plus

    • 1-minute sit ups: 28 repetitions
    • 1-minute push-ups: 24 repetitions
    • 300 Meter run: 70.1 seconds or less
    • 1.5-mile run: 15:55 minutes or less
