About Us
Bordentown City is a small, but bustling Northern Burlington County community nestled against the Delaware River and the Abbott Marshlands. Over 300 years ago, Joseph Borden recognized the value of the settlement's location and established a system to transport people and goods between New York City and Philadelphia. Today, Bordentown is still an important crossroads; the New Jersey Turnpike, Route 195, Route 295, Route 130, and Route 206 all run through Bordentown. In 1831, the ‘John Bull’ was assembled and tested on the outskirts of town. It became one of the first steam locomotives to be operated in the United States and the image of the train features prominently in Bordentown City’s seal. Today, New Jersey Transit’s River Line carries commuters to 20 other train stations between Trenton and Camden and facilitates connections to the Northeast Corridor and SEPTA lines.
Bordentown has been home to historical figures like Clara Barton (a nurse and teacher who founded the American Red Cross), Francis Hopkinson (a Founding Father and signer of the Declaration of Independence), Thomas Paine (a Founding Father and notable political philosopher), Patience Wright (the first recognized American-born sculptor), and Joseph Bonaparte (former King of Spain and Napoleon's brother). Bonaparte's estate was once referred to as 'the second-finest house in America’ and is now the site of the Bordentown City Municipal Complex. Though the town covers only about a square mile (most of which is designated Historic District), it is home to over 4,000 residents and features an even larger daytime population. The Bordentown City Police Department also provides services to the neighboring borough of Fieldsboro, which covers 0.3 square miles and is home to approximately 500 residents. The area is predominantly residential, and like Bordentown City, it borders Bordentown Township and the Delaware River. Fieldsboro has a rich history of its own, and its wharf was used to dock American frigates and gunboats during the Revolutionary War. Our community offers an extraordinary combination of cooperative residents, thriving local industry, rich history, preserved nature, and convenient location.
