Course Overview
This specialized training program equips law enforcement officers with the knowledge and skills needed to safely and effectively deploy pistols and rifles in close-quarters tactical situations. The course prioritizes the protection of officers, suspects, and innocent bystanders throughout all training scenarios. Participants learn multiple carrying positions, both individual and team-based operational tactics, critical decision-making processes, and de-escalation methodologies. Through reality-based scenario training, officers gain practical experience in managing both compliant and non-compliant subjects during dynamic, high-risk encounters.
Eligibility Requirements
This course is open to OPOTC-certified peace officers, deputies, and troopers employed on a full-time or part-time basis by an Ohio law enforcement agency.

Important Training Notes
This course utilizes training cartridges only—NO LIVE FIRE is conducted. The OTOA provides training pistols and rifles, appropriate safety equipment, and training munitions for scenario-based exercises. Officers are required to bring their own duty or personal rifles/carbines and semi-automatic pistols, but NO LIVE AMMUNITION OR MAGAZINES are permitted in the training environment or classrooms. A special safety note applies to those carrying a SIG P320 or variant: such firearms must be unloaded before entering any training area.
Required Equipment
Participants must bring duty or personal rifles/carbines with slings, duty or personal semi-auto pistols, duty belts with holsters or concealed carry holsters, patrol body armor/vest carriers (if applicable), handheld flashlights, protective gloves suitable for firing, training-appropriate attire, wrap-around eye protection, and a billed baseball-style cap. The OTOA will supply training firearms, safety equipment, and munitions. Tasers, batons, and OC spray are not permitted.
Schedule
Classes begin each day at 8:00 AM and run a minimum of 8 hours daily. A lunch break is provided, but meals are not furnished; participants should plan to bring their own food and beverages.
Medical Considerations
Attendees with allergies to bees, outdoor plants, or animals should bring their epinephrine pen or other necessary medication. Any life-threatening allergies or pre-existing injuries or medical conditions must be reported to OTOA training staff on the first day of the course.
Participant Responsibilities
Students are responsible for providing their own ammunition, arranging lodging and transportation, and securing meals. All tactics, techniques, and technologies presented must comply with the United States Constitution, the Ohio Revised Code, and the policies and procedures of the student's employing law enforcement agency.
