Eligibility

This training is available to OPOTC-certified peace officers, deputies, and troopers who are employed on a full-time or part-time basis by an Ohio law enforcement agency.

Course Overview

This two-day program prepares officers to safely and effectively deploy pistols and rifles in close-quarters settings while prioritizing the wellbeing of officers, subjects, and innocent civilians. Participants will learn proper weapon carry positions, both individual and team-based tactical operations, critical decision-making processes, and de-escalation strategies. Through reality-based training scenarios, officers gain practical experience managing a variety of situations involving both cooperative and resistant individuals, readying them for complex, high-risk field situations.

Important Note: This course uses training cartridges only—no live fire is conducted.

  • A contemporary and secure methodology for managing close-quarters contexts
  • Conventional and non-conventional ways to carry weapons
  • Emphasis on protecting officers, subjects/suspects, and bystanders
  • Tactical approaches for managing compliant and non-compliant persons
  • Solo, partner, and team-based operations
  • Decision-making exercises using force-on-paper scenarios
  • De-escalation approaches
  • Tactical judgment and decision-making

Required Equipment

What NOT to Bring: Live ammunition, ammunition magazines, tasers, batons, or OC spray are strictly prohibited in training areas and classrooms.

What to Bring:

  • Duty or personally-owned rifle/carbine with sling (unloaded)
  • Duty or personally-owned semi-auto pistol (unloaded)
  • Duty belt with holster or concealed carry holster
  • Patrol-style external body armor/vest carrier, if applicable
  • Handheld flashlight
  • Protective gloves suitable for handling and firing pistols and rifles
  • Training-appropriate clothing
  • Wrap-around safety eyewear
  • Baseball-style or billed cap
  • Personal food and water
  • Note-taking materials

Special Instruction for SIG P320 Users: If you carry a SIG P320 or variant, ensure it is unloaded before entering any training area.

Provided by OTOA: Training pistols and rifles, appropriate safety gear, and training ammunition for scenario-based exercises.

Schedule

Each day begins at 8:00 AM sharp. Daily training spans a minimum of 8 hours and is distributed across multiple days to allow comprehensive instruction. A scheduled lunch break is provided each day; however, participants must bring their own meals and beverages.

Medical Requirements

Participants with allergies to bees, outdoor plants, or animals should bring their epinephrine pen or other necessary medications. Any life-threatening allergies, pre-existing injuries, or medical conditions must be disclosed to OTOA training staff on the first day of the course.

Student Responsibilities

Participants are responsible for providing their own training ammunition, arranging lodging and transportation, and supplying their meals.
