Man Tracking Operations

Backcountry Tactics offers a specialized 5-day training program designed to equip tactical teams, law enforcement agencies, and correctional units with the skills needed to conduct man tracking operations in open terrain, forested areas, and rural settings. This course is delivered at your facility and tailored to your team's needs.

Course Format: The program combines focused classroom instruction with extensive hands-on field and range exercises, force-on-force scenarios involving role players, table-top exercises, and a comprehensive final functional exercise.

Primary Objective: Officers completing this course will be prepared to effectively respond to and participate in man tracking operations.

  • Introduction to visual tracking
  • Land navigation using maps, compass, and GPS
  • Firearms skills specific to man tracking operations
  • Tracking team tactics
  • Nighttime operations
  • Use of force in open air environments
  • Integration of K9 teams
  • Coordination with drone aviation assets
  • Incident command considerations

Instructor: Charlie Winslow brings extensive experience from a 29-year law enforcement career, including 26 years with a SWAT team, where he served as operator, sniper, team leader, executive officer, and commander. He has been the Tactical Training Coordinator and lead instructor at Crater Tactical Training since 2010 and has been teaching tactical woodland operations and man tracking professionally for 15 years. He received the NTOA John Kolman Award of Excellence in 2010.
