This comprehensive training program equips law enforcement officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage impaired driving investigations following arrest. Beginning with a review of fatal crash investigation protocols, the course progresses through the essential post-arrest stages of operating under the influence cases, which represent a significant portion of contested criminal matters.
Officers will explore constitutional requirements and procedural safeguards pertaining to chemical testing administration after arrest, with emphasis on documentation and chain of custody. The course emphasizes the importance of producing thorough, court-ready reports that clearly document investigative findings and officer observations. Participants will engage in practical exercises, including mock cross-examination scenarios, to develop confidence and effectiveness when testifying in judicial proceedings.
Sponsored by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, this training covers the complete investigation lifecycle from initial traffic stops through Bureau of Motor Vehicles proceedings. Special attention is devoted to identifying and investigating drug impairment cases, with particular focus on cannabis and opioid influence detection and documentation.
