This in-depth training program equips law enforcement professionals with essential knowledge and practical skills for investigating Operating Under the Influence (OUI) offenses. Recognizing that impaired driving investigations have become increasingly complex, this course addresses modern challenges including drug-impaired driving, legalized cannabis, and evolving legal standards. Participants will gain expertise from the initial roadside stop through final courtroom presentation and Motor Vehicle Bureau proceedings.

Sponsored by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, the curriculum examines comprehensive impaired driving investigation protocols with particular emphasis on identifying and documenting impairment related to cannabis, opiates, and other controlled substances.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion, participants will be able to apply OUI legal elements to both alcohol and drug-related impairment cases, recognize and communicate indicators of operational impairment during roadside interactions and field sobriety assessments, render informed and legally defensible arrest decisions supported by evidence, properly execute chemical testing procedures in accordance with legal requirements, and deliver persuasive testimony and comprehensive documentation in court and BMV hearings.
