Trauma Informed Policing

Course Overview

The Police Officer Standards and Training Council's Field Services Training Division offers instruction in trauma-informed policing (TIP), designed to build competency in recognizing and responding to individuals who have experienced trauma. This full-day program explores what trauma is, how it manifests, and evidence-based approaches for law enforcement personnel encountering trauma survivors.

Schedule & Location

The training takes place on Wednesday, November 18, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Connecticut Police Academy, 285 Preston Avenue, Meriden, Connecticut 06450. Enrollment is limited to 30 participants.

Course Content

Topics addressed include the concept of trauma and its presentation, the effects of trauma exposure on both emergency responders and community members, trauma-responsive intervention techniques, the foundational principles of trauma-informed practice, specialized interview methods for trauma-affected individuals, and handling sensitive scenarios while maintaining current knowledge.

Instruction

Deputy Chief (Retired) James Harris and instructional staff from J. Harris Academy of Police Training will lead the course.

Cost & Requirements

This course carries no tuition. Attendees may purchase lunch at nearby restaurants. The uniform dress code for POST in-service training as outlined in General Notice 23-02 is mandatory.

Registration

Interested officers should register through the Acadis portal no later than Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Training officers must provide agency email addresses and POST ID (for sworn personnel) with all enrollment applications to ensure timely communication regarding in-service training matters. Training Credit

Upon successful completion, students earn six (6) review training credit hours as indicated below.
