Fundamentals of Crisis Negotiation

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, in partnership with the Police Officer Standards and Training Council's Field Services Training Division and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is conducting a five-day introductory seminar on crisis negotiation. This program will run from Monday, October 26, 2026, through Friday, October 30, 2026, at the Connecticut Police Academy located at 285 Preston Avenue, Meriden, 06450. Daily sessions will operate from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Instruction will be led by a Special Agent from the FBI's New Haven Field Office, with additional instructors including Special Agents from the FBI's New Haven Field Office and crisis negotiators representing the Connecticut State Police and Trumbull Police Departments.

The curriculum covers crisis negotiation fundamentals, practical negotiation strategies, active listening methods, scenario-based role-play exercises, abnormal psychology, mental health and crisis intervention frameworks, legal considerations, and supplementary specialized topics.

This program targets patrol officers and first responders who have not received previous crisis or hostage negotiation training and who intend to develop competency as crisis negotiators. Enrollment is capped at 30 participants. Registration must be completed through the Acadis portal by the close of business on Monday, October 5, 2026. There is no tuition cost for this course. Participants may purchase lunch at nearby dining establishments. The uniform dress code established in POST In-Service training General Notice 23-02 will apply, and training supervisors should ensure all attendees are informed of this requirement.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive Review Training Credit hours in the designated training areas listed below.
