Prerequisite: Candidates must have successfully completed a NHTSA/IACP approved Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST) training program that included a wet lab component.

Course Overview: This two-day seminar is jointly offered by the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection's Police Officer Standards and Training Council and the Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Office in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and the Technical Advisory Panel (TAP). The program bridges the gap between SFST instruction and the Drug Evaluation and Classification (DEC) program by equipping officers with foundational knowledge about drug impairment recognition and promoting the use of Drug Recognition Experts (DREs) throughout Connecticut. Participants will examine the seven primary drug categories and their physiological effects on the human body. The curriculum covers techniques for observing, recognizing, and articulating signs of impairment resulting from drugs, alcohol, or combined substance use. Additional topics include medical conditions that can mimic impairment signs, the significance of eye examinations in identifying drug impairment and potential drug categories, recent SFST testing developments, and legal considerations surrounding impaired driving enforcement and pre-arrest and post-arrest procedures. Officers must pass an SFST proficiency demonstration administered by an instructor to successfully complete the course.

Requirements: A laptop computer is required to access course materials; attendees must bring their own. Class size is capped at 20 participants. Registration must be completed through the Acadis portal no later than the close of business on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. Lunch is available for purchase at nearby restaurants.
