Criminal Interview & Interrogation

Course Overview

This one-day seminar, offered by the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection's Police Officer Standards and Training Council Field Services Training Division, focuses on developing skills to recognize truthfulness and deception during criminal interviews. Participants will explore the distinctions between interviewing and interrogation techniques, learning when and how to apply each approach effectively.

Learning Objectives

Throughout the program, attendees will develop proficiency in evaluating subjects and interpreting nonverbal communication cues during interviews. The course covers cognitive dissonance and jeopardy—critical psychological concepts essential to understanding and evaluating suspect responses. Participants will have hands-on opportunities to practice newly acquired skills through realistic scenarios with professional role players, applying techniques learned and analyzing suspect statements.

Lunch arrangements are the responsibility of individual participants, with local restaurants available near the training facility. Attendees are expected to comply with the uniform dress code requirements outlined in POST General Notice 23-02.
