Police Internal Affairs

This extensive 40-hour training program serves newly assigned internal affairs officers and supervisors, seasoned professionals seeking skill enhancement, civilian investigators, and management personnel involved in overseeing internal affairs operations. The curriculum is tailored to address the unique requirements of public safety agencies of all sizes, from small to large departments.

Students will develop comprehensive knowledge of investigative methodologies and legal frameworks essential for conducting internal affairs investigations, including inquiries into criminal violations and officer-involved shooting incidents. The course progresses systematically through the investigative process, emphasizing professional, objective, and thorough approaches to both standard administrative investigations and specialized inquiries involving sexual harassment and hostile workplace allegations.

The instruction covers current court precedent, nationally recognized best practices in complaint management and investigation procedures, officer rights protections, social media policy frameworks, relevant administrative regulations regarding documentation, and media information disclosure protocols.

  • Ethical standards and integrity within law enforcement
  • Internal affairs policies and operational procedures
  • Complaint receipt and handling processes
  • Integrity examinations and undercover operations
  • Personnel complaint investigations
  • Interview preparation and execution strategies for complainants, witnesses, and officers under investigation
  • Case documentation, filing systems, and early warning mechanisms
  • Sexual harassment and hostile workplace complaint investigations
  • Applicable laws and relevant legal precedents
  • Officer-involved shooting investigations and in-custody death inquiries
  • Body camera utilization and protocols
  • Collaborative projects and presentation activities

The course employs specialized interview techniques designed to enhance the quality and effectiveness of investigative interactions. Participants will also gain practical experience through group-based projects and presentations.

Intended Audience: This training is restricted to sworn and non-sworn law enforcement personnel, including internal affairs investigators, professional standards unit staff, law enforcement and public safety leaders, and human resource or municipal/county managers overseeing law enforcement personnel.

Schedule Information: All sessions meet from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. Registration fee is $995.00 per participant.
