Course Overview:

This comprehensive course prepares emergency telecommunicators, dispatchers, call takers, 9-1-1 specialists, and their supervisors to respond effectively to individuals who have experienced trauma. The curriculum integrates trauma-informed principles into first-responder communications, emphasizing both the needs of callers and the wellbeing of telecommunications personnel themselves. Participants will gain insight into how trauma affects both the public they serve and their colleagues, learning strategies to prevent vicarious and cumulative trauma within their teams and personal lives.

What Participants Will Learn:

  • Define trauma and identify various types, signs, and symptoms
  • Understand PTSD, vicarious trauma, and recovery strategies for first-responders
  • Apply appropriate trauma-informed responses in real-world situations
  • Master trauma-informed interview techniques

Instructional Methods:

All telecommunicators and supervisory personnel. New Jersey OETS approved for 8 BTC CTEs and 4 EMD CTEs when combined with an afternoon Dispatcher Update course.
