Police Motorcycle Instructor

This comprehensive program prepares experienced motorcycle officers to become qualified instructors capable of developing and delivering professional motorcycle training programs within their agencies. The course emphasizes advancing riding proficiency while establishing frameworks for high-quality departmental motorcycle training initiatives.

The first week concentrates on skill advancement through a series of progressive riding exercises designed to enhance advanced control techniques, precision maneuvers, and tactical decision-making abilities. Participants then transition to curriculum development and program management, focusing on strategies to ensure only the most capable officers are assigned to motorcycle operations.

Throughout the program, candidates develop expertise in high-stress operational performance, including alarm response management, tactical breathing techniques, and mental visualization strategies essential for real-world motorcycle operations. The course incorporates practical tactical scenarios featuring live fire exercises and motorcycle-specific problem-solving activities.

As a capstone requirement, each instructor candidate must successfully complete a timed and scored obstacle course evaluation and participate in extended street rides through varied and demanding environments. Additional coursework involves designing range layouts, developing training schedules, and constructing comprehensive departmental motorcycle training curricula. Each participant delivers an instructional unit that receives formal evaluation by IPTM staff.

Course Details:

  • Duration: 80 hours
  • Class Schedule: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Designed for: Current motorcycle officers and academy instructors who are active law enforcement personnel
  • Motorcycle Requirement: Two-wheeled motorcycles with minimum 1000 cc displacement

Prerequisites:

  • Active status as a skilled and current rider
  • Valid motorcycle driver's license endorsement as required by state of residence
  • Successful completion of a certified police motorcycle rider course or equivalent from an approved police motorcycle instructor

Required Materials:

  • Department-issued motorcycle currently assigned or IPTM-approved comparable motorcycle in good condition with pre-course maintenance completed
  • Rain gear, one dress uniform, and adequate casual riding attire
  • Light or heavy riding jacket appropriate to weather conditions
  • Approved helmet, riding gloves, and ankle-covering boots or dress boots
  • On-duty weapon, holster, body armor, eye and ear protection, and sunglasses
  • Four hundred rounds of ammunition (100 frangible or standard training rounds)

Additional Information:

Participants must sign a liability waiver prior to engaging in practical exercises. Florida law enforcement personnel may qualify for FDOT grant-funded seats. This course is not eligible for certificate discounts.
