Video Motion Analysis in Crash Investigation

This comprehensive five-day, hands-on training program is specifically designed for crash investigators and reconstructionists who seek to enhance their analytical skills through modern video forensics techniques. Participants will develop proficiency in extracting and analyzing vehicle speed data directly from video footage, making this course essential for both law enforcement professionals and private sector reconstruction specialists.

The curriculum builds upon foundational knowledge from IPTM's At-Scene and Advanced Crash Investigation courses, progressing into advanced topics including video metadata interpretation, scene diagramming methodologies, and motion analysis software applications. Students will engage in guided instruction, practical field exercises, and real-world case study analysis throughout the program.

Course Topics and Skills

  • Identification and interpretation of video metadata as it applies to crash investigation work
  • Scene diagramming techniques utilizing manual methods, aerial photography, and LiDAR technology
  • Operation of Kinovea and comparable video motion analysis software for frame-by-frame analysis
  • Application of Constant, Uniform, and Average Time and Speed mathematical formulas to calculate vehicle velocity from video data
  • Examination of real-world case studies demonstrating effective video motion analysis applications
  • Practical field exercises that simulate actual crash investigation scenarios
  • Professional presentation strategies for communicating findings in courtroom and legal settings

  • Scientific calculator featuring square root, sine/cosine, and parentheses functions
