Event Data Recorder Use in Traffic Crash Reconstruction - Level I

This 40-hour intensive program instructs participants on the proper analysis and interpretation of event data recorder (EDR) information from any vehicle manufacturer. Attendees will develop skills in analyzing EDR data collected through various imaging tools, including manufacturer-specific software, as well as emerging vehicle technologies.

The course emphasizes integration of EDR findings with roadway evidence calculations to create a thorough reconstruction that incorporates all available data. Participants receive practical checklists, analytical guides, and pre-built templates designed to enhance accuracy and consistency in complex analyses.

  • Analysis of EDR data from any manufacturer
  • Verification that recorded events correspond to the incident under investigation
  • Recognition of incomplete or irrelevant EDR data
  • Delta-V concepts and applications
  • Integration of Delta-V with scene evidence to determine closing speed and impact velocity
  • Cross-vehicle Delta-V calculations
  • Vehicle operational conditions affecting EDR speed accuracy
  • Impact of equipment modifications on data interpretation
  • Pre-crash data analysis for loss-of-control detection and peak speed identification
  • Speed-at-impact range calculations for various EDR systems
  • Time-distance analysis for perception point estimation
  • Driver behavior assessment and approach speed determination using EDR data
  • OEM-specific Excel template utilization
  • Evidence preparation for Frye and Daubert legal standards

Intended Audience: Law enforcement and private traffic crash investigators, insurance fraud specialists and claims adjusters, engineers, attorneys, safety officers, military investigative personnel, and collision animation and simulation professionals.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of IPTM's Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course or equivalent experience. Participants must demonstrate proficiency with traditional scene evidence reconstruction methods including slide-to-stop calculations, momentum analysis, and critical speed yaw analysis. A strong mathematics and physics foundation is essential; those without this background are encouraged to complete IPTM's 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics (Online) course beforehand.

Required Materials: Laptop computer equipped with Microsoft Excel for template work.

Recommended Materials: Recently completed or active case files (particularly involving current model-year vehicles subject to Part 563 regulations) and a calculator with cosine, tangent, and square root functions.

Classroom Experience: Participants work in collaborative teams analyzing actual crash case studies and EDR reports. Comprehensive solutions are provided for reference and future application.

Professional Credit: This course is eligible for 40 ACTAR Continuing Education Units.

Note: This course does not include operation training for the Bosch Crash Data Retrieval Tool, though such technician training is available separately through IPTM's online program. Prior experience with Bosch CDR tools is not required for enrollment or successful course completion.
