Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation by IPTM
Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation
This course represents the second offering in a three-course sequence designed to advance your expertise in traffic crash investigations. Building on the foundational knowledge from IPTM's At-Scene Traffic Crash/Traffic Homicide Investigation course, participants will explore sophisticated methodologies and theoretical applications specific to complex collision scenarios.
Throughout the 80-hour program, students will examine intricate vehicle dynamics including acceleration and deceleration principles, as well as airborne motion scenarios. The curriculum emphasizes speed estimation techniques derived from falls, vaults, and flips, alongside calculations involving kinetic energy and linear momentum. Additionally, participants will develop skills in evaluating vehicle components such as lamps and tires, as well as analyzing damage patterns to reconstruct vehicle behavior during collisions.
A significant portion of instruction focuses on applying acceleration and deceleration factors combined with perception and reaction time analysis to establish temporal and spatial relationships between colliding vehicles.
Course Topics
- Mathematical review from prerequisite coursework
- Deceleration factors and their practical applications
- Speed estimation techniques using kinetic energy, skidmarks, and scuffmarks
- Combined speed and velocity calculations
- Vehicle dynamics and motion principles
- Temporal, spatial, and motion equations with analysis
- Vehicle crush damage documentation and linear perimeter measurement
- Hands-on classroom projects to build confidence with equation application
Target Audience
This training is appropriate for law enforcement personnel and private traffic crash investigators, claims adjusters, engineers, attorneys, safety officers, military investigative personnel, and professionals working with collision animation and simulation graphics.
Prerequisites and Requirements
