Investigation and Prosecution of Cold Case Homicides

Overview

This comprehensive two-day training program equips criminal justice professionals with advanced investigative and prosecutorial strategies necessary to successfully resolve long-standing and unsolved homicide cases. Through detailed examination of real-world cases, best practice methodologies, interactive group sessions, and current investigative tools, participants gain practical knowledge to overcome common obstacles in cold case prosecution. The course also covers strategies for establishing and managing effective cold case units within law enforcement agencies.

Instructional Content

The curriculum covers death investigation fundamentals, case selection and preparation protocols, cold case management best practices, collaboration between investigators and prosecutors, behavioral analysis applied to cold cases, advanced interviewing techniques, case strategy development, no-body homicide investigations, biological forensic methodologies, and real-world case studies with student-led case reviews.

Instruction Team

The course is taught by experienced investigators and prosecutors with extensive backgrounds in homicide investigation. James Holmes, a retired Special Agent from the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation, brings decades of expertise in major crimes and cold case investigations. Mark MacKizer, an NCJTC Associate Instructor and retired FBI Special Agent, contributes specialized knowledge from his 27-year career in violent crime investigations and his work with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit.

What's Included

The training fee covers 16 hours of comprehensive instruction, all program materials, and instructional costs. Participants are responsible for arranging and paying for their own meals, transportation, and lodging.
