This comprehensive five-day course, offered by the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM), is tailored for traffic crash investigators and reconstructionists who seek to enhance their investigative expertise through video-based analysis techniques. The course provides both law enforcement professionals and private sector investigators with practical skills in extracting and analyzing vehicle speed data from video evidence.

Course Overview

Participants will build upon foundational knowledge from IPTM's At-Scene and Advanced Crash Investigation courses while exploring specialized topics including video metadata interpretation, scene diagramming methodologies, and motion analysis software applications. The curriculum combines theoretical instruction with hands-on field exercises and real-world case study analysis to ensure proficiency in applying video motion analysis techniques to actual crash investigations.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and interpret video metadata elements pertinent to crash investigations
  • Diagram crash scenes using manual, aerial, and LiDAR-based techniques
  • Utilize Kinovea and comparable video motion analysis software to examine and isolate video frames
  • Apply mathematical formulas including Constant, Uniform, and Average Time and Speed equations to calculate vehicle speeds from video footage
  • Analyze real-world case studies demonstrating practical applications of video motion analysis
  • Conduct field exercises that simulate actual crash scenarios
  • Present investigative findings effectively in professional and legal settings
