Bloodstain Interpretation for Detectives

Course Overview

This specialized training program targets detectives investigating violent crimes who do not have direct responsibility for gathering or documenting blood evidence at crime scenes. The course aims to strengthen the investigative capabilities of homicide and crimes-against-persons detectives by building their competency in bloodstain pattern analysis. Participants will gain practical knowledge about recognizing evidentiary value in bloodstain evidence and learn how to leverage it effectively as a forensic investigative tool.

Course Content

Through a combination of lecture-based instruction and real-world case study analysis, attendees will develop a thorough understanding of bloodstain formation, causation, and the behavioral patterns they reveal. Key topics covered include:

  • Identifying bloodstains and patterns that offer probative insights into the actions and movements of individuals involved in blood-letting events
  • Techniques for extracting relevant evidence from crime scenes where alterations have occurred
  • Distinguishing characteristics between deaths resulting from medical causes versus those of a suspicious nature
  • Documentation methods available for preserving bloodstain and pattern information for expert review
  • Selection criteria for bloodstains suitable for DNA analysis with maximum investigative value
  • Expectations from expert bloodstain pattern analysis and its application throughout investigations
  • Integration of expert analysis findings into investigative procedures and courtroom proceedings

Intended Audience

This course is designed for sworn law enforcement officers, detectives, investigators, and military investigative personnel. Please note that this program excludes crime scene investigators, as it contains no laboratory component. Attendance is limited to sworn law enforcement personnel and those directly assigned to law enforcement agencies.

Duration and Format

The course spans 16 hours of instruction. A hybrid format option is available for those unable to participate in person.

Scheduled Sessions

Multiple sessions are offered at the IPTM facility located at Adam W. Herbert University Center, 12000 Alumni Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32224. Classes run from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Upcoming dates include December 10-11, 2026; March 25-26, 2027; and December 9-10, 2027. The course fee is $595.00. Instruction is provided by Anna Cox.
