Event Data Recorder Use in Traffic Crash Reconstruction - Level I

This comprehensive 40-hour program provides instruction on analyzing event data recorder (EDR) information from vehicles of any manufacturer. Participants will develop skills in working with EDR data extracted through various imaging platforms, including proprietary manufacturer tools and systems from newly released vehicles.

The course integrates EDR analysis with roadway evidence calculations to produce thorough crash reconstructions that incorporate all obtainable evidence. Participants receive practical checklists, reference guides, and pre-designed templates to enhance accuracy and consistency in their analytical work. The training includes real-world crash case studies completed in team environments, with detailed solutions provided for future consultation.

Intended Audience

This course serves law enforcement and private traffic crash investigators, insurance fraud specialists and claims adjusters, engineers, attorneys, safety officers, military investigative personnel, and collision animation and simulation professionals.

Prerequisites

Participants must have successfully completed IPTM's Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course or an equivalent program, with demonstrated understanding of conventional scene evidence reconstruction methods including slide-to-stop calculations, momentum analysis, and critical speed yaw procedures. Those without a strong foundation in mathematics and physics are encouraged to complete IPTM's 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics online course prior to enrollment.

Requirements and Recommendations

Required: Laptop computer with Microsoft Excel for working with provided templates

Recommended: Recently closed or active case files (particularly those involving recent model year vehicles subject to Part 563 regulations) and a calculator with cosine, tangent, and square root functions

Important Notes

This course does not provide technician certification for operating the Bosch Crash Data Retrieval Tool. Specialized technician training for this tool is available through IPTM's separate Bosch CDR Tool Technician Training program (offered in both in-person and online formats). Prior experience with the Bosch CDR tool is not required for course registration or completion.

For eligible Florida sworn law enforcement officers, limited tuition grant funding is available through the Florida Grant Funded Training Catalog. Federal and military law enforcement personnel in Florida do not qualify for this assistance.
