This comprehensive 40-hour course is designed to equip traffic crash investigators with the skills needed to effectively analyze event data recorder (EDR) information from any manufacturer. Participants will learn methodologies for interpreting EDR data collected through various imaging tools—including proprietary manufacturer systems and data from cutting-edge vehicles—and integrate this information with roadway evidence to produce thorough reconstructions that account for all available evidence.
The training covers essential techniques such as determining Delta-V values, reconciling EDR data with scene evidence, estimating closing speeds and impact velocities, and utilizing time-distance analysis for point-of-first-perception calculations. Investigators will gain insights into driver behavior patterns and approach speeds through EDR data analysis, while also learning to identify circumstances where recorded data may be incomplete or irrelevant to a specific incident. Practical templates and reference checklists are provided to enhance consistency and accuracy in complex analyses.

Course is Suitable For: Law enforcement personnel, private traffic crash investigators, insurance fraud specialists, claims adjusters, engineers, attorneys, safety officers, military investigative personnel, and collision animation/simulation professionals.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of IPTM's Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course or equivalent, plus demonstrated understanding of traditional crash reconstruction methods including slide-to-stop calculations, momentum analysis, and critical speed yaw analysis. Students without strong mathematics and physics foundations are encouraged to complete IPTM's 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics (Online) course beforehand.
Required Materials: Laptop computer with Microsoft Excel for working with provided templates.
Recommended Materials: Recently closed or active case files (particularly those involving recent model year vehicles subject to Part 563 regulations) and a calculator with cosine, tangent, and square root functions.
Continuing Education: This course qualifies for 40 ACTAR CEUs.
Important Notes: This course does not include hands-on technician training for the Bosch Crash Data Retrieval Tool; separate technician training is available online. Prior experience with the Bosch CDR tool is not required for registration or course completion. Florida sworn law enforcement personnel may qualify for FDOT grant-funded tuition assistance (federal and military law enforcement personnel in Florida do not qualify).
