Event Data Recorder Use in Traffic Crash Reconstruction - Level I
This 40-hour course is designed to equip participants with comprehensive skills in analyzing event data recorder (EDR) information from any manufacturer and integrating that data with roadway evidence to develop thorough crash reconstructions. Attendees will gain practical knowledge in leveraging EDR data alongside traditional investigative evidence while utilizing simplified checklists, guides, and pre-built templates to enhance both consistency and accuracy throughout the analytical process.
Course Content
The training covers a wide range of competencies including EDR data analysis from any vehicle manufacturer, validation of recorded events against specific crashes, identification of incomplete or irrelevant data, and Delta-V calculations. Participants will learn to correlate Delta-V measurements with scene evidence to determine closing speeds and impact velocities, calculate appropriate speed ranges for various EDR systems, and utilize pre-crash information to identify loss of vehicle control. Additional topics include time-distance analysis for first perception estimates, driver behavior evaluation, OEM-specific Excel template utilization, and methods for supporting both Frye and Daubert legal proceedings with peer-reviewed research and established references.
Target Audience
This course is appropriate for law enforcement officers, private traffic crash investigators, insurance fraud specialists, claims adjusters, engineers, attorneys, safety officers, military investigative personnel, and collision animation and simulation professionals.
Prerequisites
Successful completion of IPTM's Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course (or equivalent) is required, along with proficiency in traditional crash reconstruction methodologies including slide-to-stop calculations, momentum analysis, and critical speed yaw analysis. Those lacking a robust mathematics and physics foundation are encouraged to complete IPTM's 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics (Online) course beforehand.
Required Materials
Participants must bring a laptop computer equipped with Microsoft Excel to utilize provided templates. A scientific calculator with trigonometric functions (cosine, tangent) and square root capability is recommended, as are recently closed or active case files, particularly those involving newer vehicle models subject to Part 563 regulations.
Professional Recognition
Completion of this course qualifies participants to earn 40 ACTAR continuing education units.
Important Notes
This course does not include hands-on technician training for operating the Bosch Crash Data Retrieval Tool; such training is available through IPTM's separate Bosch CDR Tool Technician Training course. Prior experience with the Bosch CDR tool is not necessary for course registration or completion.
Florida sworn law enforcement personnel: A limited number of grant-funded seats are available through the Florida Grant Funded Training Catalog. Federal and military law enforcement personnel stationed in Florida are not eligible for these grants.
