Overview: This 20-hour training course, approved by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training for continuing education credit, equips law enforcement officers with advanced knowledge of contraband concealment methods used by smugglers and drug trafficking organizations. Participants will examine sophisticated hiding places in vehicles where contraband, weapons, and currency are secreted, while learning comprehensive interdiction techniques grounded in legal and ethical practices.

Schedule Note: The first two days run from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM local time, with the final day running from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM local time.

Key Learning Objectives: Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Recognize current smuggling patterns and trends within the contraband market
  • Analyze the expansion of Mexican Cartels and their operational impacts
  • Distinguish between lawful traffic stops and various law enforcement encounter types, including consensual interactions
  • Execute safe traffic stops and transition them into effective Criminal Interdiction arrests
  • Apply strategic questioning and concealed interview techniques during encounters
  • Request consent using proper legal procedures
  • Deploy K-9 units appropriately and understand relevant case law
  • Conduct comprehensive vehicle searches according to law enforcement standards
  • Identify criminal activity indicators and apply search and seizure laws correctly
  • Master sophisticated contraband location techniques in hidden compartments
  • Properly collect and process cellular phones and evidentiary items
  • Execute appropriate follow-up procedures upon discovering contraband or criminal evidence
  • Safely handle and identify various substances including fentanyl, tranq, 2CI, 2CE, GHB, khat, PCP, flakka, molly, and liquid methamphetamine
  • Apply asset forfeiture procedures for currency seizures
  • Maintain officer safety while conducting lawful, ethical operations

Course Materials: Students receive comprehensive course materials including a reference manual for courtroom use, a 150+ page illustrated guide featuring actual concealment methods and arrest documentation, real in-car camera footage from Criminal Interdiction cases, current photographic evidence from actual arrests, and up-to-date case law relevant to search and seizure issues.

Special Topics: The course provides in-depth instruction on drug identification, proper handling and testing procedures, and the connections between drug trafficking networks and terrorist organizations.

POST Credit: Participants may apply for POST credit upon course completion.
