The Newark Police Division serves New Jersey’s largest city, with an estimated population of more than 323,000 residents, and provides police services to a diverse community that includes major business districts, universities, transportation hubs, cultural institutions, entertainment venues, and Newark Liberty International Airport.
The Division responds to more than 520,000 calls for service annually, providing officers with extensive experience in patrol, investigations, community policing, traffic enforcement, special operations, and other areas of law enforcement.

Minimum Requirements:
Basic Requirements:
- Must be a United States citizen.
- Must be between 18 - 34 years of age (some exceptions may apply).
- Must possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license at time of application.
- Must be a resident of the City of Newark in accordance with Municipal Ordinance 2:24-1.2(e).
- Current resident of Newark with at least two (2) years of residency at time of application.
An applicant may be exempt from the residency requirement if the applicant can show proof of residency within the City of Newark for five (5) years at any time prior to application (applicant must be able to provide supporting documentation). - Must possess a High School diploma, or approved High School equivalent certificate (GED).
- Must be literate (ability to speak, read, & write the English language).
- Must be physically fit & successfully complete a training course (approved by the Police Training Commission).
- Must be eligible for law enforcement licensure (issued by the Police Training Commission).
- Must pass a comprehensive background investigation which includes but is not limited to:
- Review of criminal & driving history.
- Psychological & medical examination (drug testing is required).
Job Description/General Duties:
Newark Police Officers are responsible for protecting life and property, enforcing laws and ordinances, preventing and investigating crime, maintaining public order, responding to emergencies, and providing police services to the community.

Hiring Process:
The Newark Police Division may consider qualified candidates through the New Jersey Civil Service Commission (Police Officer eligible/certification list), as well as legally authorized recruitment and hiring processes consistent with N.J.S.A. 52:17B-4.10 et seq. (“The Act”).
Candidates selected for consideration must successfully complete the Newark Police Division’s hiring process, which includes a comprehensive background investigation, medical and psychological examinations, drug screening, physical-fitness requirements, and all applicable New Jersey Police Training Commission (PTC) licensing requirements.
All appointments are subject to applicable Civil Service requirements, PTC licensing standards, eligibility requirements, available vacancies, and final approval by the appointing authority.
