General Definition/Conditions of Work:
The Police Officer works under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant. Performs responsible protective service work in the Police Department. The work involves an element of personal danger. Available positions are for patrol officers working on a platoon and for two foot patrol officers for downtown Bristol.
This is heavy work. A Police Officer must successfully complete a physical agility course consisting combination of speed, agility, balance and comprehension of commands and requirements of the police academy. An officer must meet the physical and psychological criteria established by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice. This position’s minimum physical tasks include but not limited to: run a mile and a half in less than 18 minutes, complete an obstacle course, climbing over a 5 foot wall, and stepping one foot at a time, 8 inches high. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, running, pulling, and lifting. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
Salary Range:
Non-Certified: $41,728 ($47,991 After completion of academy)
Certified: $47,991
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years of age by application deadline.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- No criminal record and have a good driving record.
- Must pass written tests,
- physical agility assessment,
- background investigation,
- physical examination and drug screen.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
- On an assigned shift, operates a patrol vehicle or walks to observe for various violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order.
- Respond to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints.
- Serve warrants and makes arrests.
- Testifies in court.
- Provides police escorts.
- Directs traffic.
- Observes traffic control measures and recommends improvements.
- Performs special assignments.
- Reports unsafe conditions existing in streets or other public facilities.
- Assists with criminal investigations by presenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, preparing property and evidence duties, recording and issuing evidence in court cases.
- Prepares detailed reports.
- Conduct themselves on and off-duty in a manner that reflects positive on the department.
- Nothing contained herein shall be deemed to limit the duties of the position to the examples contained herein.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures.
- Some knowledge of the geography of the city and location of important buildings.
- General knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear, comprehensive reports.
- Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public.
- Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
- Ability to develop skill in the use of firearms and the operation of motor vehicle.
- Possession of physical agility and endurance.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Associates Degree or equivalent in Criminal Justice or related field is preferred.
Licenses/Certificates or Other Requirements:
- Department of Criminal Justice Certification, or able to obtain through academy training.
- Required to pass obstacle course.
- Being bilingual, though not required, is a highly preferred skill for the position.
