Specialized Units: The Abington Police Department offers a variety of specialized positions, including K9, Detectives, School Resource Officers, Court Prosecutor, Drone, UTV/ATV, Mountain Bike, and Motorcycle Units, providing officers with opportunities to grow in diverse areas of law enforcement. Additionally, as part of Metro-LEC, officers can join various regional task forces, such as SWAT or Cybercrimes Unit, strengthening collaboration with partner agencies.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Applicants must not be a convicted felon.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Possess, or have the ability to obtain a Massachusetts driver's license.
  • Possess, or have the ability to obtain a Massachusetts License to Carry a firearm pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 140.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification through the Massachusetts P.O.S.T. Commission.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a background investigation, passing a medical and psychological examination.
  • Must live within 20 air miles within the first year of employment.
  • Weighted consideration given to residents of Abington, those with advanced degrees and current or honorable discharged members of the military.
  • MPTC Bridge Academies not accepted. 

Benefits:

The base salary range for a Police Officer is $67,912.00 (Step 1) to $75,379.20 (Step 7) per the most recent collective bargaining agreement.

Incentives such as educational will be added to base pay based on degree:

  • 10% for an associate’s,
  • 20% for a bachelor’s, and
  • 25% for a master’s.

Additional incentives and benefits consist of the following:

  • Longevity pay adds 0.5% for each year of law enforcement experience starting after five (5) years;
  • Employees enjoy paid vacation benefits to support work-life balance.
  • Twelve (12) holidays (with the option of time off or pay);
  • On-duty workout time;
  • 9%-night shift differential for evening and overnight regularly worked;
  • The department offers competitive detail pay, with increased rates for night and weekend assignments;
  • Uniform allowance;
  • Multiple specialty position percentage/stipend opportunities;
  • Participation in the department sick leave bank;
  • Member of the Plymouth County Retirement System.
