The Town of Eliot has approximately 7500 residents year-round with some summer residents.
Portions of the town are on the Piscataqua River and Sturgeon Creek. We have 52 miles of roadway consisting of private, town and state owned. We are an hour from Boston, MA, 40 minutes to Portland, ME and 5 minutes to downtown Portsmouth, NH. We have a number of recreational parks one on the river with a boat launch, walking paths, picnic areas and playground. We are part of an RSU with the Town of South Berwick, the school system is rated one of the best in Maine and is an attraction for many young families to live in our community.
 
We have a Town Manager, Select Board, Town Meeting form of government. Departments consisting of Town Office, Police Department, Fire Department, Recreation Department, Public Works and Transfer Station. Town residents and management are very supportive of the town staff they understand the need to recruit and retain dedicated employees to serve this great seaside community.
 
The Town of Eliot Police Department might be smaller than others, but it's mighty. Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent apprentice level of trade knowledge; one to three (1-3) years of prior work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Special Requirements: Possession of a valid State Motor Vehicle Operator's License. First Responder and CPR Certification. Completion of Basic Recruit Academy. Ability to acquire a License to carry a firearm without restriction.

 

Job Description/General Duties

The Patrolman performs routine and specialized police law enforcement work to protect lives and property and the prevention and suppression of crimes within the Town of Eliot in carrying out the enforcement of state and federal laws and local Bylaws. The employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.

Abilities: Ability to handle and carry out law enforcement duties during emergency situations often under adverse weather and/or stressful, life-threatening conditions. Ability to deal with disgruntled or violent members of the public in a safe, professional and tactful manner. Ability to independently research laws or legal briefs for guidance. Ability to make decisions in a timely, common sense and safe manner. Ability to work at any hour of the day or night and for extended periods of time often under adverse or life-threatening conditions. Ability to fire a gun with accuracy.

Skills: Proficient oral and written communication as well as computer skills. Excellent physical skills to be able to protect yourself and others. Common sense skill to determine the most appropriate response to emergency situations. Technical skill in operating police vehicles, firearms and various types of police equipment in a safe and effective manner, often under adverse weather and life-threatening conditions. Self-motivational skills. Maintain good physical condition to perform the physical skills required as described below.

  13. Additional pay hourly for bachelor's degree at $2.00/hr. and $1.00 for associate degree or Honorable Discharged Veteran.
  14. Earn sick time at 12 hours a month at the start of employment, up to maximum of 120 days
  15. Vacation: 240 hours annually awarded on July 1; new employees will have pro-rated vacation to start.
  16. Training: Management is pro employee, as training is the key for a success. The town believes in investing in their staff.
  17. Educational reimbursements based on grade received.
  18. On-site fitness and health and wellness program.
  19. Evening shift additional $1.50 an hour
  20. Midnight shifts additional $3.00 an hour
