JOB TITLE:  Correctional Deputy – Lateral
AGENCY:  Carroll County Sheriff’s Office – Westminster, MD
STARTING SALARY:  $54,642 Annually (Grade D02A – Non-Exempt)
HIRING BONUS:  $5,000 (First $2,500 paid on date of hire)

POSITION TYPE

Certified and experienced corrections applicants with:

  • Maryland (MPCTC) Corrections Certification and 24+ months of corrections experience, OR
  • Out-of-state corrections experience (24+ months)

Out-of-state applicants must complete a Maryland corrections academy within one year of hire.

ROLE SUMMARY

Correctional Deputy – Lateral performs full correctional officer responsibilities under a first-line supervisor. This role ensures the safety, security, order, and welfare of inmates within the Detention Center.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise and monitor inmate housing units and daily activities
  • Conduct inspections and searches to maintain security and prevent contraband
  • Enforce rules, regulations, and operational procedures
  • Prepare reports on incidents and routine activities
  • Participate in required training and complete academy (if applicable)
  • Assist with intake and release of inmates
  • Respond to inmate needs and maintain a safe environment
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • U.S. Citizen or Resident Alien
  • Education:  High school diploma or GED recognized by the State Board of Education that meets COMAR standards
  • Experience:  Minimum 24 months of continuous corrections experience (MD certified or out-of-state)
  • License:  Valid driver’s license
  • Character:  No criminal record or dishonorable discharge from the military; must demonstrate integrity, sound judgment, and emotional stability
  • Physical Condition:  Must meet agency medical standards
