Position Description

PUBLIC SAFETY DISPATCHER

Starting Pay 24.95 per hour

 

CLASSIFICATION:  Public Safety Dispatcher
GRADE: Step 1

 

Position Summary:  Responsible for the operation of the Town’s Communication system.

Supervision Received:  Works under the general direction of the Police Chief or on duty supervisory police personnel.

Supervision Exercised:  None.

Description of Duties:  Responsible for communication with all public safety agencies in the Town and the public work’s department.  The dispatcher answers all calls on the Enhanced-911 computerized system and the communications center telephone system.  The dispatcher is responsible for the dispatching of police cruisers, fire apparatus, ambulances, wreckers and/or any other services as required, to handle emergency situations or disasters.  Dispatches all fire personnel over the paging system that each fireman carries to alert members of specific fire companies of fires, medical emergencies or routine calls in their companies’ district.  Does a nightly test of the fire department radio, paging and siren systems.  Maintains radio contact with Public Works Department trucks to advise them of snow conditions or road emergencies.  Record police and fire calls and maintains any other records to facilitate the Communications Center efficiency.  The dispatcher has to monitor the close surveillance system for building and prisoner security and/or well being.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:  Ability to operate telephone systems, Police and Fire Department radios, Fire Department paging system, computers, microphones and sirens in both normal and emergency situations.

 

Special Requirements:  No felony convictions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk clearly and be able to hear incoming communications on the radio and the telephone.  The employee is occasionally required to walk.  The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or  controls; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee has to sit at a console.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.  Employee must be able to fill out written reports.
